AirDorrin: interesting flight
Bev
and I flew down to
Raleigh with some friends, and ate a nice dinner on a night return
flight. On the second trip to pick them up, I had another encounter
with ice and spent two days in Roanoke Rapids waiting it out.
Second
round trip to Raliegh comes up short due to Freezing Rain. Spent
two days cooling my heels in Roanoke Rapids(RZZ) airport after
encountering freezing rain just 50 miles short of my destination,
Raleigh Durham. You can read about my freezing rain experience last
year under the Interesting
Flights
link below. Instantaneous decision this time. Thanks very much to Ms.
Terry Harris, who works at the airport there. Terry got on the radio
before I even landed to fill me in on the weather that would keep me
there if I landed. I most likely could have beat feet back home instead
of landing, but then again - maybe fuel would have been inadequate, and
maybe ice would have gotten up with me, and maybe the air would have
been saturated at the same time all around me. Training kicked in and I
refused to vascilate. I landed knowing I'd be there awhile, but also
considering that since the forecast was so wrong that the ice problem
might also have been temporary. moving on.....
- garmin
weather was right
- i went under the weather in clear
visual conditions
- forecast times were right - but
the forecast itself was wrong
- got caught in frzng
rain and decided to turn back immediately
- landed,
even though the manager was talking with me and warning me I'd be there
a bit... decision made - land
